Ghana, once the undisputed champion of West African gold production before being surpassed by Mali and Côte d'Ivoire in recent years, is staging a significant comeback. Persistently high gold prices, streamlined permitting processes under the revised Minerals Commission Act, and improved political stability have attracted a new wave of junior mining companies to the Ashanti Belt.

Industry data compiled by the Ghana Chamber of Mines shows exploration expenditure increased by 34% in the first half of the year compared to the same period a year earlier, with over 40 new exploration licences granted, the highest semi-annual total since 2012.

Several Australian and Canadian junior miners have made high-profile entries, attracted by the geological prospectivity of areas adjacent to proven world-class deposits held by major operators including Gold Fields and AngloGold Ashanti.

The regulatory environment has been a key catalyst. The government's decision to streamline environmental impact assessment procedures and reduce the licence processing timeline from an average of 18 months to under 9 months was welcomed by industry stakeholders as a meaningful practical improvement.
