The Democratic Republic of Congo has recorded an 18% year-on-year increase in copper production during the third quarter, according to figures released by the Ministry of Mines in Kinshasa. Output reached approximately 680,000 tonnes, the highest quarterly figure since 2014.

The surge is primarily attributed to the commissioning of a new hydrometallurgical smelter in Kolwezi, operated by a joint venture between a major Chinese state-owned enterprise and the Congolese parastatal Gécamines. The facility is designed to process both primary ore and low-grade tailings, extending the productive life of several mature deposits in the Copperbelt region.

Copper prices on the London Metal Exchange have remained above $9,500 per tonne through most of the year, providing strong economic justification for the capital-intensive investment. Analysts at major commodity houses forecast copper demand will continue to outpace supply growth through at least 2030, driven by the electric vehicle transition and grid infrastructure expansion globally.

For the DRC, increased copper revenues represent a critical opportunity to diversify fiscal income. The country currently derives over 70% of its export earnings from mining, yet royalty collection and benefit-sharing with host communities remains inconsistent, according to government transparency watchdogs.

"Production numbers are encouraging," said a senior analyst based in Lubumbashi, "but the real test will be whether this growth translates into tangible development outcomes for the communities living around the mines."
